After Thoughts

We hope everyone had a pleasant time and that you walked away with a little more knowledge than you had previous to Jewelry Camp Day at FIT.  We would like to thank everyone who joined us last Sunday as well as all the wonderful speakers!  Also, a special thanks to Nancy Ross and Michael Coan for all of their help in coordinating this wonderful day!

I had several people email me afterwards, who loved the fact that we decided to have this one day conference in the city, especially for those who are unable to attend out summer conference.

The dates for "Jewelry Camp" this summer have been announced and posted on the website http://www.jewelrycamp.org and are as follows:

Registrations are now being accepted and Payment Plans are available again this year!

All Major Credit Cards are accepted, however if you are setting up a payment plan and using AMEX there will be a processing charge of $25.00 added to the total charged, this is due to the higher rates of AMEX this year (we apologize for any inconvenience)

All tuition and housing must be paid in full by June 22, 2011

With Sunday just around the corner I wanted to send an email to everyone on our list to let you know that it isn't to late to register.  

For those of you who have already registered, the program will begin at 9am Sunday morning, Building D, Katie Murphy Amphitheater.  This is where you will receive the schedule for the day (this is also located on the website should you want to view it ahead of time) as well as check in.  I look forward to seeing all the familiar faces as well as many news ones.  I think my favorite part of Jewelry Camp is the fact that there are always many new friendships made, I know sounds a little corny!  At the bottom of this page you will also find transportation directions.  I would also like to make sure that everyone has my cell phone as well as Edward's.  For directions, trust me, call him... 516-429-2622 for anything else you my contact myself, Sandy...631-377-9766

The college is located at West 27th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues. This midtown location, the center of the fashion industries, is easily reached by every subway, major railroad line, and bus route in the city. See the left-hand navigation for details on reaching FIT by air, by rail, or by road. Though there are parking garages in the neighborhood, there is no on-campus parking.

From LaGuardia Airport
Take the Grand Central Parkway West exit out of the airport bear right onto Brooklyn Queens Expressway East which becomes I-278 West/Brooklyn Queens Expressway bear right onto I-495 West/Long Island Expressway follow through the Midtown Tunnel take the 34th St./Downtown exit turn right onto E. 34th St. turn left onto Lexington Ave. turn right onto E. 27th St. continue onto W. 27th St.

From JFK International Airport
Take the Van Wyck Expressway exit/I-678 North merge onto the Van Wyck Expressway to the I-495/Long Island Expressway exit merge onto I-495/Long Island Expressway West follow through the Midtown Tunnel take the 34th St./Downtown exit turn right onto E. 34th St. turn left onto Lexington Ave. turn right onto E. 27th St. continue onto W. 27th St.

From Newark International Airport
On the Newark International Airport Exit Take the US-1/US-9 ramp towards New York Via Skyway (Rt-21) merge onto US-1/US-9 North US-1/US-9 North becomes US-1 North US-1 North becomes 12th St. follow through Holland Tunnel take the Uptown fork and turn right onto Hudson Street Hudson Street becomes 8th Avenue turn right onto W. 28th St. turn right onto 7th Ave to W. 27th St.

Subway
Take the 1 or the N, R to the 28th Street Station. Alternatively, take the C, E, or F to the 23rd Street Station or take the 1, 2, 3, A, C, E, D, F, N or Q to the 34th Street Station. For more info visit the MTA's website at www.mta.info.

Railroad 
Take Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, or the Long Island Railroad to Pennsylvania Station at 34th Street and 7th Avenue. Walk south on 7th Avenue to 27th Street.

Take Amtrak or Metro-North commuter railroad (Harlem, Hudson, New Haven, Port Jervis, and Pascack Valley Lines) to Grand Central Station at 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue.  Take the S shuttle subway to Times Square, then the 1 downtown to the 28th Street station. 

Take PATH trains to the 23rd Street or 34th Street stations.

DIRECTIONS TO FIT BY BUS 

Take the Crosstown bus at 23rd Street or 34th Street. 

Take the 7th Avenue or 8th Avenue bus. 

The Port Authority Bus Terminal is at 40th Street and 8th Avenue. 

New Jersey buses go to the George Washington Bridge Terminal, and then take the subway or metropolitan bus line.

JCK Show Announces Extended Dates and Enhanced Features

As JCK Las Vegas 2011 finds its new home at Mandalay Bay this June, attendees can expect extended show days, new exhibitors, and new product focus areas, JCK Events announced Jan. 6.
The show will feature a redesigned show floor organized by product category to aid buyers in efficiently shopping the JCK show floor. More than 80 percent of the floor will occupy product location “destinations” with the introduction of silver, bridal, fashion jewelry, and pearls.
A growing number of new exhibitors have signed up for this year’s show, including Temple St. Clair, Rio Tinto Diamonds, Lagos, Alex Sepkus, and Breitling (at Swiss Watch at JCK), among others.

In addition, extended dates for LUXURY, Equipment Technology & Supplies, and AGTA will allow additional opportunities for buyers to source key areas of the show floor. LUXURY, typically a three-day event, will expand to seven: May 31–June 6 (May 31–June 2 by invitation only). GIA Announces Winners of Annual George A. Schuetz Jewelry Design Contest

International competition draws winning entries from three continents

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Jan. 7, 2011 – GIA (Gemological Institute of America) recently announced the winners of the annual George A. Schuetz Jewelry Design Contest. The international competition, which recognizes the best original men’s jewelry and accessories designs, is named in honor of the late men’s jewelry designer George A. Schuetz, Sr.

Contestants from all corners of the globe entered the competition. The winning entries represent three continents: Australia, Asia and Europe.

Karl Williams of Wellington, New Zealand captured the first place award with a bold ring design that features a 1.5 carat (ct.) center-cut diamond offset by eight .25 ct. side diamonds. The striking rendition provided by Williams combines a platinum band with 18 ct. yellow gold segments and rivets.

“It is an absolute honor to take first place in such a prestigious international design competition,” Williams said. “I believe the scope for design in men’s jewelry is extensive, and the Schuetz contest encourages designers to push creativity to the limit. I would like to thank GIA for sponsoring the contest, as it provides an incredible opportunity for designers to earn recognition for their work.”

Open to all designers, the Schuetz contest is judged by an independent panel of industry experts that evaluates each entry’s form, wearability, manufacturability and appeal. Winners receive a crystal plaque commemorating their achievement; the first place award winner also receives $500.

The second place award went to Clarrie Yap of Pokfulam, Hong Kong. Yap, who recently earned a GIA Graduate Gemologist (G.G.) diploma, was chosen for an intricate ring design that highlights the beauty of an urban landscape. Elena Lorenzi, a GIA Accredited Jewelry Professional (A.J.P.) from Ventimiglia, Italy, claimed the third place award with an elegant pendant made of white gold and onyx.

Established in 1973, the competition pays tribute to Schuetz and gives GIA an opportunity to advance the dreams and goals of young designers.

“We’re proud to host the contest each year to celebrate the contributions Mr. Schuetz made to men’s jewelry design,” said Robert Ackermann, a GIA jewelry design instructor who directed the 2010 competition. “GIA is committed to fostering individuals within the industry, and a large part of that is encouraging young designers to take creative risks and expand their horizons.”

To enter the competition, contestants are asked to submit one original color design rendering that has not been previously exhibited or offered for sale. Entries can be submitted each year between April 15 and June 15. There is no fee to enter. Entry forms for the 2011 George A. Schuetz Design Contest will be available April 15.
